Is Gambling Bad?

Gambling is a popular past time for people all over the world. Gambling can be viewed as a game of chance in which the participants make a bet or wager on a specific proposition. The term "gambling" refers to the act of placing a bet or a wager on an item or event without having any knowledge of the state of affairs at the time of placing the bet or wager. Gambling can take many forms. It may refer to gaming, card or board games, racing, arts and crafts, and horse racing.

The majority of gambling games are played in casinos. However, there are many other locations where the same games are played. Many countries across the world have licensed operators to operate gambling facilities. In the United States, these are permitted to operate through out the states. In some states the laws against gambling are more restrictive than in others. That is why it is advisable to seek legal advice from a lawyer who is familiar with gambling laws before making a decision to take part in any activity related to gambling.

Most opposition to gambling originates from among the major players in the industry and is supported by a number of business groups claiming that gambling is dangerous and degenerates into a vocation or business enterprise leading to social problems and negative consequences for the country. Businessmen claim that gambling takes away their employees and leaves them unemployed, and many of them go so far as to say that gambling leads to crime and lawlessness in general. They also claim that gambling destroys the family unit and is responsible for the increased birth rate of illegal aliens. Many opponents of gambling also claim that gambling leads to the bad economic status of the nation.

Opponents of gambling also claim that gaming has distorted the public mentality in that too much gambling can cause people to lose their moral standards and self-respect. The argument goes that a person can lose control over his/her actions and desires after participating in the gaming games and thus become a menace to society. It is this argument that has been used for ages to ban games like gambling and poker from public places. Many cities and states across the United States have taken action against gaming in recent times; some have even gone as far as closing down entire casinos.

The proponents of gambling also argue that since the payout in a casino is dependent on how well you know your fellow players, the only way a gambling outcome can be affected is if there are an unknown number of participants in the game, thereby decreasing the overall impact of the gamble. They further claim that the probability of such an outcome is infinitesimal. To strengthen their case, they point out that millions of Americans enjoy their daily cup of coffee and spend countless hours playing their favorite games at home. Gambling is therefore not only harmless; it is a perfectly safe pastime activity.

The fact remains that there are many people who will argue that the issue of gaming is a complex one, and thus any blanket statement such as 'gambling is bad' should not be applied to everyone. However, there is no doubt that it can have harmful effects on the individual, particularly those who have addictive traits and wish to escape reality by indulging in dangerous games. While it is impossible to entirely remove gambling from our lives, we can certainly limit its impact on our everyday lives.
